## Geography
Eastern Thailand lies between the [Sankamphaeng Range](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankamphaeng_Range), which forms a natural border with the [Khorat Plateau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khorat_Plateau) to the north and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. The geography of the region is characterized by short mountain ranges (collectively grouped under the [Chanthaburi Range](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanthaburi_Range)) alternating with small basins of short rivers which drain into the Gulf of Thailand. Between the Chanthaburi and Sankamphaeng mountains lies the basin of the [Bang Pakong River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang_Pakong_River) system.
Fruit is a major component of agriculture in the area, and tourism plays a strong part in the economy. The region's coastal location has helped promote [eastern seaboard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Seaboard_of_Thailand) industrial development, a major factor in the economy of the region.[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Thailand#cite_note-3)
Islands off Eastern Thailand's coast include [Ko Sichang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Sichang), [Ko Lan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Lan), [Ko Samet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Samet), and [Ko Chang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Chang).
### **National parks**
*Main article: [List of national parks of Thailand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_Thailand)*
Within the eastern region, there are some eight [national parks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_protected_areas_of_Thailand#National_parks_in_western,_central_and_eastern_Thailand). [Pang Sida National Park](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pang_Sida_National_Park) covers 844 km2 in Sa Kaeo province, it constitutes a part of the [Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Heritage_Sites_in_Thailand) UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering in total around 6,100 km2. The total forest area is 8,205 km2 (3,168 sq mi) or 22.4 percent of this eastern region area (incl. Nakhon Nayok province).[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Thailand#cite_note-RFD-1) [Mu Ko Chang National Park](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu_Ko_Chang_National_Park) in Trat province includes 85 percent of Thailand’s second-largest island Ko Chang. The beaches on the western coast of Ko Chang have been excluded from the national park for the reason of facilitating the tourism industry. [Mu Ko Samet National Park](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khao_Laem_Ya_-_Mu_Ko_Samet_National_Park) in Rayong province is just 6 km long by 3 km wide with beaches covered with some of the finest white sand in the country.
## Administrative divisions
According to the [six geographical regions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Thailand#Grouping_systems) established by the National Research Council of Thailand, the eastern region includes seven provinces.

## Languages
*Main articles: [Thai language § Dialects](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language#Dialects), [Isan language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isan_language), and [Western Khmer dialect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Khmer_dialect)*
The main language of Eastern Thailand is the [Central Thai language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language) but also [regionalism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regionalism_(politics)). Krungthep dialect ([dominant variant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistic_imperialism)) is spoken among [Thai Chinese](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Chinese) communities, that is [EEC area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Economic_Corridor)s (such as in [Chonburi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mueang_Chonburi_District), [Siracha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Si_Racha_District), [Pattaya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattaya), [Padriew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mueang_Chachoengsao_District), [Bangpakong](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang_Pakong_District), etc.), the dialect from Prachinburi Province is pretty similar to Ayutthaya dialect (a traditional working-class dialect in Bangkok), while the Rayong dialect and Chantaburi dialect are pretty similar with Suphanburi dialect (another dialect in Central Thailand).
The Isan languages are minority status in Eastern Thailand, most are spoken in the eastern part of [Prachinburi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prachinburi_Province) and upper part of [Sa Kaeo Provinces](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa_Kaeo_Province), this is the same variant as the Khonkaen dialect (Standard Lao language). Khmer language in Eastern Thailand is mostly spoken among the older generation in Chantaburi and today become an [endangered language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endangered_language).
