## **Southern Region Montessori Homeschool Centers, Groups, and Families**
**(Official Registered Thai Homeschooling and Learning Centers that are following or are oriented on the Montessori Curriculum in addition to other mandatory or chosen Thai or international curricula)**
The Thai homeschool year starts in January and ends in November. December is considered a holiday. A half-term break can be chosen freely. All Thai National Tests (O-Net) are optional for homeschoolers. Thai parents need to register their children to be legally able to homeschool their children with the provincial primary or secondary Education office. In some provinces, the secondary Education office is located in another province (i.e. Phuket Secondary students need to be registered in [Phang Nga Secondary Education Office](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Phang_Nga_Secondary_Education_Office&action=edit&redlink=1) while Elementary students can be registered with the [Phuket Primary Education Office](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Phuket_Primary_Education_Office&action=edit&redlink=1)). Additionally, they need a Homeschool "Leader" with at least a Secondary Grade Final Exam (Mathayom 6). The Thai Government is supporting homeschool families financially per school term. Foreigners can not lead a Homeschool while they are able to teach Homeschool students.

**Khao Sok National Park, Surat Thani**
Southern Thailand is on the [Malay Peninsula](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_Peninsula), with an area of around 70,714 km2 (27,303 sq mi), bounded to the north by [Kra Isthmus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kra_Isthmus), the narrowest part of the peninsula. The western part has highly steep coasts, while on the east side river plains dominate. The largest river in the south is the [Tapi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapi_River,_Thailand) in [Surat Thani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surat_Thani_Province), which together with the [Phum Duang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phum_Duang_River) in [Surat Thani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surat_Thani_Province) drains more than 8,000 km2 (3,100 sq mi), more than 10 percent of the total area of southern Thailand. Smaller rivers include the [Pattani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattani_River), [Saiburi](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Saiburi_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Krabi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krabi_River), and the [Trang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trang_River). The biggest lake in the south is [Songkhla Lake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songkhla_Lake) (1,040 km2 (400 sq mi) altogether). The largest artificial lake is the Chiao Lan (Ratchaprapha Dam), occupying 165 km2 (64 sq mi) of [Khao Sok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khao_Sok) National Park in [Surat Thani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surat_Thani_Province). The total forest area is 17,964 km2 (6,936 sq mi) or 24.3 percent of the provincial area.[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-RFD-1)
![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/LaoLiangPhi.jpg/960px-LaoLiangPhi.jpg)
**Ko Lao Liang Phi**
Running through the middle of the peninsula are several mountain chains, with the highest elevation at [Khao Luang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khao_Luang), 1,835 m (6,020 ft), in [Nakhon Si Thammarat Province](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakhon_Si_Thammarat_Province). Ranging from the Kra Isthmus to [Phuket](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phuket_Province) Island is the [Phuket chain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phuket_mountain_range), which connects to the [Tanao Si Mountain Range](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanao_Si_Mountain_Range) further north. Almost parallel to the Phuket chain, but 100 km (60 mi) to the east is the [Nakhon Si Thammarat or Banthat chain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakhon_Si_Thammarat_mountain_range), which begins with [Samui Island](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Samui), [Ko Pha Ngan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Pha_Ngan), and [Ko Tao](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Tao) in Surat Thani Province and ends at the [Malaysian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia) border at the Ko Ta Ru Tao archipelago. The border with Malaysia is formed by the [Sankalakhiri range](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankalakhiri_mountain_range), sometimes sub-divided into the Pattani, Taluban, and Songkhla chains. At the Malaysian border, the [Titiwangsa chain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titiwangsa_Mountains) rises up.
The limestone of the west coast has been eroded into many steep singular hills. The parts submerged by the rising sea after the last ice age now form many islands, like the well-known [Phi Phi Islands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phi_Phi_Islands). Also, well known is the so-called *James Bond Island* in [Phang Nga Bay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phang_Nga_Bay), featured in the movie *[The Man with the Golden Gun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_with_the_Golden_Gun_(film))*.
The population of the growing region is projected to be 9,156,000 in 2015, up from 8,871,003 in 2010 (census count and adjusted), despite these figures are adjusted for citizens who have left for Bangkok or who have moved to the region from elsewhere, as well as registered permanent residents (residency was problematic in the prior 2000 census), the figure is still misleading. There are still a huge number of migrant or informal workers, temporary workers, and even stateless people, and a large expatriate population is not included.[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-3)
Most of Southern Thailand is in [Tenasserim-South Thailand semi-evergreen rain forests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenasserim-South_Thailand_semi-evergreen_rain_forests) [ecoregion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecoregion). The [Peninsular Malaysian rain forests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peninsular_Malaysian_rain_forests) and [Peninsular Malaysian montane rain forests](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peninsular_Malaysian_montane_rain_forests) ecoregions extend into southernmost Thailand along the border with Malaysia.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-4)

**Malay Muslim provinces in Southern Thailand and northern Malaysia.**
The Malay peninsula has been settled since prehistoric times. Archeological remains were found in several caves, some used for dwellings, others as burial sites. The oldest remains were found in [Lang Rongrien](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lang_Rongrien&action=edit&redlink=1) Cave, dating 38,000 to 27,000 years before the present, and in the contemporary Moh Khiew cave.
In the [first-millennium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_millennium) Chinese chronicles mention several coastal cities or city-states. No exact geographical locations were recorded, so the identification of these cities with later settlements is difficult. The most important of these states was [Langkasuka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langkasuka), usually considered a precursor of the [Pattani Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattani_Kingdom); [Tambralinga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tambralinga), probably the precursor of the [Nakhon Si Thammarat Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakhon_Si_Thammarat_Kingdom), or [P'an-p'an](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Pan_(kingdom)) in Phunphin district, Surat Thani, probably located at the [Bandon Bay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandon_Bay) [Tapi River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapi_River,_Thailand). The cities were highly influenced by [Indian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_India) culture, and have adopted [Brahman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahman) or [Buddhist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist) religion. When [Srivijaya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srivijaya) in [Chaiya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaiya) extended its sphere of influence, those cities became tributary states of Srivijaya. The city [Chaiya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaiya) in [Surat Thani Province](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surat_Thani_Province) contains several ruins from Srivijaya times and was probably a regional capital of the kingdom. Some Thai historians even claim that it was the capital of the kingdom itself for some time, but this is disputed.
After Srivijaya lost its influence, Nakhon Si Thammarat became the dominant kingdom of the area. During the rule of King [Ramkhamhaeng the Great](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramkhamhaeng_the_Great) of [Sukhothai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhothai_kingdom), Thai influence first reached Nakhon Si Thammarat. According to the Ramkhamhaeng inscription, Nakhon Si Thammarat was a tributary state of Sukhothai. During most of the later periods, Nakhon became a tributary of [Ayutthaya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayutthaya_kingdom).
The deep south belonged to the Malay sultanates of [Pattani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattani_Kingdom) and [Kedah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kedah), while the northernmost part of the peninsula was under the control of Bangkok.
During the *Thesaphiban* reforms at the end of the 19th century, both Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pattani were incorporated into the central state. The area was subdivided into 5 *[monthon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monthon)*, which were installed to control the city-states (*[Mueang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mueang)*). Minor *Mueang* was merged into larger ones, thus forming the present 14 provinces. With the [Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Siamese_Treaty_of_1909), the boundary to Malaysia was fixed. Kedah came under British control, while Pattani stayed with Siam.
## Languages
*Main articles: [Southern Thai language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thai_language), [Kelantan-Pattani Malay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelantan-Pattani_Malay), and [Thai language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language)*
The largest native language is **[Southern Thai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thai_language)** ([Thai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language): ภาษาไทยใต้ [\[pʰaːsǎː tʰajtâːj\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)), also known as **Pak Thai** or **Dambro** ([Thai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language): ภาษาตามโพร [\[pʰaːsǎː taːmpʰroː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)), which is a [southwestern Tai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_Tai_languages) language [spoken](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken_language) in the 14 *[Changwat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Thailand)* of southern Thailand as well as by small [Thai communities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_Siamese) in the northernmost [Malaysian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia) states. It is spoken natively by roughly five million people and as a second language by the 1.5 million native speakers of [Patani Malay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patani_Malay). and other [ethnic groups](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups) such as the local [Negritos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negritos) communities, and other tribal groups.\[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*\]
Although [Central Thai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_language) is the sole official language in Thailand and most people are able to communicate in Central Thai, the language is only the third-largest native language in Southern Thailand, with roughly four hundred thousand native speakers. In particular, it is only native among [Teochew, Hoklo, Hakka, and Cantonese ethnic groups](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_Chinese), particularly in their major [ethnic enclaves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_enclaves) like [Hat Yai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat_Yai_District) and [Bandon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mueang_Surat_Thani_District) districts.

## Economy
The bulk of the southern population relies on agriculture for 27 percent of its gross regional product in 2014. It is followed by industry (12 percent), trade (10 percent), transportation (9 percent), tourism (8 percent), and construction and property (7 percent).[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-9) For FY 2018, Southern Thailand Region had a combined economic output of 1,402 trillion baht (US$45.2 billion), or 8.6 percent of Thailand's GDP. Surat Thani province had an economic output of 206.869 billion baht (US$6.67 billion). This equates to a GPP per capita of 182,371 baht (US$5,883), more than double that for Yala province, which is fifth, and more than three times for Narathiwat province, lowest in the ranking.[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-10)

## Transportation
Southern Thailand is connected with Bangkok by railway as well as highway. Several regional airports are located in the larger towns. The transportation hub of all of south Thailand is Hat Yai.
### **Road**
[Phetkasem Road](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phetkasem_Road) is the longest road in Thailand, running from Bangkok along the Kra Isthmus and then along the west coast of the peninsula. From Trang, it crosses over to the east coast to Hat Yai and ends at the Malaysian border.
Two [Asian highways](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_highway) run through Southern Thailand: [Asian Highway 2](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH2) runs mostly parallel to the railroad all the way from Bangkok. It crosses to Malaysia at [Sadao](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadao_District) and continues on the west side of the peninsula. [Asian Highway 18](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH18) begins in Hat Yai and runs south along the east coast, crossing Malaysia at [Sungai Kolok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sungai_Kolok).

### **Rail**
The [southern railway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Railway_of_Thailand#Southern_Line) connects Bangkok to Hat Yai and continues from there to Sungai Kolok. There are branches from [Ban Thung Phoe Junction](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ban_Thung_Phoe_Junction&action=edit&redlink=1) to [Kirirat Nikhom](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kirirat_Nikhom&action=edit&redlink=1). Two smaller branches of the railway run from [Thung Song](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thung_Song) to Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat, and from [Hat Yai Junction](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hat_Yai_Station&action=edit&redlink=1) to Malaysia and Singapore.
### **Air**
Southern Thailand has five international airports and six domestic airports. As of 2018, Thailand's transport ministry is constructing the 1.9 billion [baht](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_baht) [Betong Airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betong_District). It is scheduled for completion in 2020.[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Thailand#cite_note-11)
